What each contribution means
- Social Security (Segurança Social) — 23.75% employer / 11% employee
- Funds pensions, sickness, parental, unemployment and survivor benefits. There is no contribution ceiling in the general regime.
- Work accident insurance — around 1% employer
- Mandatory private cover for occupational accidents; the rate depends on the risk profile of the role and the insurer.
- IRS income tax — 13% to 48%
- Withheld monthly on progressive brackets after employee Social Security and the standard specific deduction of €4,350 per year. Personal circumstances (marital status, dependants, tax credits, the IFICI regime and the young-worker IRS Jovem relief), the solidarity surcharge and the official withholding tables are not applied in this estimate.
- Holiday and Christmas subsidies
- Employees in Portugal receive 14 payments per year. Both subsidies carry Social Security and IRS in the same way as ordinary salary.
